Individuals with a flair for public speaking in Nigeria now have the opportunity to be crowned Speechmasters. The Institute of Certified Communicators(ICCOM), producers of Diction Avenue, the longest running English language based educational programme on Nigerian Television, the Speechmasters Court and GrillandRead have come together to bring to you, a first of its kind National Speaking Competition tagged the ICCOM Speechmasters National Contest. The Speechmasters Contest is open to pupils, students and individuals in Nigeria.
The objective of the contest is to show the practical value of communicating clearly in the English language. “Communication is a unique ability to man, says Chris Nkwocha, CEO of ICCOM, “and so the message from ICCOM is that that clear communication can be the difference between success and failure.” He adds, “No matter what trade you practice, you will need to make effective presentations. The way you speak can make you win opportunities. That is why we say ‘your accent is your asset’”.
“We are especially targeting young Nigerians on social media. They do a lot of oral communication and selling with videos. Podcasts are also becoming a thing among those who choose public speaking. We are giving them another reason to be more intentional about how they speak. We intend to make this an annual event. This competition is our way of improving the quality of discourse in the Nigerian social media space,” Mr Nkwocha emphasised.
Everyone can Participate in the Speechmasters Contest
The competition, which is in senior and junior categories, has as its star prize One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000) and Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) respectively. There are also consolation prizes of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000) and Five Thousand Naira (N5,000) to ten runners up in each of the categories. The press release also stated that while contestants in the junior category will be restricted to the topic, “Why your accent is your asset”, the senior category has been left open to encourage more versatility.
In addition to the cash prizes, candidates in both categories get airtime on Diction Avenue subject to how much Facebook likes they can gather weekly. “I am particularly excited about the planned weekly showcase of talents,” reveals Abigail Anaba, presenter of Diction Avenue and Convener of GrillandRead. “The weekly upvotes will enable contestants to showcase their talents to the world, so they must put their best foot forward,” she added.
Interested individuals can now register for the contest. The ICCOM Speechmasters National Competition opens immediately and will run until October 20th 2019.
