How to teach vowel Number 3 / e /

/e/ is vowel number three. It is midway between the vowels /ɪ / and /æ/

Some people from Eastern Nigeria may have a harder time saying the /e/ sound because it is not a letter in their alphabet. So, you may hear the sound substituted with /ɪ /. You can listen to the sound here. However, it is not a difficult sound to say with practice.

It is also important to point out that /e/ is a short sound and so its loudness is relative. A common mistake made with the sound is to make it long.

Usually, the /e/ sound is spelt with the letter ‘e’ as the sound just before the syllable is closed by a consonant. It is nearly impossible in the English language, to have a short sound in an open syllable.

How to teach /e/ sound to beginners

Step One:

Write the word bed on the board. Ask learners to pronounce it

Step two:

Write the sound /e/ on the board and letter ‘e’ in front of it. Explain that the letter ‘e’ gives the sound /e/. Ask all the students to repeat the sound and note learners who are not able to properly articulate the sound.

Step three:

Give other word examples for the sound using consonant replacement (you can replace the beginning or end consonant) bed – bet – set – met – fed – led – less – mess

Step four:

Ask learners to supply more word examples. Note that they may supply words with other spelling variants. Use the dictionary to confirm whether the given words have the vowel or not.

Step 5:

Have learners repeat /e/ in isolation and then practice writing it down in their notebooks. Pay more attention to those who had initial difficulty and see if they have self-corrected. If not, give them additional help by demonstrating the position of the tongue and differentiating /ɪ / and /e/.
